Project description
The LNG Masterplan aimed to create a legislative and logistical framework for the use of liquefied natural gas as an ecological and efficient fuel on the Main-Rhine-Danube axis.
This project made an important contribution to initiating the implementation of LNG in the inland navigation sector and represented a joint effort of sea and river ports, authorities, barge operators, technology and energy suppliers in removing market barriers and achieving of an LNG supply chain on the Rhine-Main-Danube axis.
The project paved the way for the large-scale use of liquefied natural gas as a commodity and fuel, being metaphorically presented as Europe's first LNG artery.
The project had 6 activities: Framework and Market Analysis, Technological and Operational Concepts, Solutions for Ships and Terminals, Regulatory Framework, Construction of Ships and Terminals and Project Management. Feasibility studies, technical concepts were drawn up, tests were carried out and LNG ships and terminals were built that were integrated into the regulatory processes of the authorities, reports and technical assessments were drawn up, working groups and tables were organized round. The LNG Masterplan developed a comprehensive strategy for the implementation of LNG as cargo and fuel on the Main – Rhine – Danube axis as well as guidelines and recommendations.
CERONAV was mainly involved in the sub-activity called Education Requirements, within which analytical programs and lesson plans were developed for several categories of staff to ensure full coverage of the logistics chain involving the use and transport of LNG, respectively:
1. Crew members in inland waterways – use of LNG as cargo and fuel 2. Terminal staff
3. The personnel from the bunkering stations
4. Executive and management personnel from companies
5. Inspectors from the competent authorities 6. Students from the logistic chain
The final conference of the project organized in Rotterdam between 15 and 16 December 2015 marked the closure of the project and the successful completion of its activities.
